Quick take

Consider black Hyken ST63137 as a budget candidate only if its fixed seat fits and the seller confirms assembled-chair return eligibility.

  • Strengths: Mesh seat and back, arm-height adjustment, lumbar-height movement and basic tilt controls. [1][2]
  • Check first: Short fixed seat, headrest fit and mesh-edge pressure. Listing and manual use conditions differ; confirm which warranty terms apply. [1][2][3]

The exact chair in scope

This preview covers the black Staples Hyken, item 990119, model ST63137. It excludes Hyken XL and Hyken Pro. Older Union & Scale/FlexFit Hyken reviews provide context, but their samples are not verified as the current ST63137 production revision. [1][3]

Staples lists a mesh seat and back, a 19.3-inch-wide by 16.7-inch-deep seat, and 17.2–20.9-inch seat height. The seat has no documented sliding depth adjustment. These are seller specifications, not TKS measurements. [1]

The retailer-linked operator’s manual explicitly includes ST63137. That model match is useful; it still does not identify the production date or components of a particular chair shipped to you. [2]

Who should consider it?

Consider it if… Consider an alternative or insist on a trial if…
Your budget is tight and you prefer mesh to a padded seat. You need to move the seat forward or backward to fit your thighs.
The fixed seat and lumbar shape suit you in person. You need more arm positioning than height adjustment.
You can confirm the applicable return terms before ordering. You are relying on an advertised workday rating as a comfort guarantee.
Your desk and body work with the documented height range. The headrest pushes your head forward or misses your neck.

These are buying judgments. TKS has not established a universal height range or a medical benefit for this chair.

What the evidence supports

The controls cover basic setup, rather than extensive tailoring. The documentation describes arm-height adjustment, vertical lumbar adjustment, tilt tension, three preset tilt-lock positions, and headrest height and angle adjustment. Moving a lumbar support vertically does not provide independent pressure tuning. Check whether the back’s shape feels right upright and reclined. [1][2]

The short, fixed seat is a central fit boundary. Compare the documented depth with the usable depth of a chair you already know. Try the Hyken with your feet supported and your back against the backrest. Check the space behind your knees and whether the front mesh edge concentrates pressure. The listed width is not a measurement of clear space between the armrests. [1]

Another outlet’s testing supplies useful caution, not a prediction for every buyer. GearLab’s July 2023 Hyken assessment reported roughly three comfortable hours and a 22-minute assembly. Its testers raised headrest-fit concerns for taller sitters and reported mesh deformation and construction concerns. The review’s lock-count descriptions are inconsistent, so we do not treat it as verification of the current mechanism. Its sample and use conditions do not establish current ST63137 reliability or a population failure rate. [3]

TKS has not verified long-term mesh support, cylinder retention, arm stability or comfortable all-day use. Older sample observations are reasons to inspect and ask questions, not proof that your chair will fail.

Evidence Confidence

Evidence Confidence describes support for a claim, separately from product quality and the 66-point score. High requires strong direct evidence or agreeing credible sources; Moderate means useful support with material limits; Limited means evidence cannot support a firm conclusion.

Claim Confidence Reason
The listed chair offers basic height, lumbar and tilt controls. Moderate Listing and model-matched manual support their existence; TKS has not checked control effort or performance. [1][2]
Its fixed seat can restrict fit. Moderate Documented dimensions and older firsthand observations support the concern; fit remains individual. [1][3]
Current ST63137 mesh and mechanisms will remain comfortable and reliable for years. Limited No TKS durability test, verified current sample or representative failure data is available.
The listing’s workday wording settles warranty eligibility for full-day use. Limited The linked manual’s use condition is narrower; seller confirmation is needed. [1][2]

Frozen TKS scorecard

These are the approved October 4 points, retained without a new scoring round. The notes identify research themes and current evidence limits; they do not recreate unrecovered point-by-point deductions. The complete original deduction narrative, owner-thread URLs and exact freeze-time purchase quote remain incomplete. Current checks update the buying discussion, not the numbers.

Price and the ownership limits

At the October 4 check, the Staples page displayed $159.99 in its main purchase area and $154.99 elsewhere on the same page. We cannot turn those conflicting displays into a single confirmed offer. Check your selection and cart; tax, delivery, services and availability depend on the order. Neither display reconstructs the exact quote used in the approved Value score. [1]

Hyken’s use-condition discrepancy matters. The listing describes its 275-pound capacity in an eight-hour-workday context. The ST63137 manual gives the original purchaser five-year defect coverage, requires purchase proof, excludes normal wear and bases the warranty on up to 3–5 hours of continual use within 24 hours, for users up to 275 pounds. Do not infer full-day warranty eligibility from the listing. Ask Staples which written terms govern the chair you would receive. These are documentation findings, not legal conclusions or TKS load tests. [1][2]

Confirm a trial before relying on “Free Returns.” Staples’ policy lists furniture returns within 14 days of receipt, disassembled and safe for shipping, with sellable-condition/original-packaging requirements. Custom-ordered or custom-assembled furniture is returnable only if defective on arrival. The same policy also has a Staples Brands quality-dissatisfaction provision of up to one year and an item-specific return-expiry date in Order Details. TKS has not resolved how those provisions apply to a chair assembled and used for a poor-fit trial. Obtain written confirmation for your exact order, retain packaging and receipt, and check the expiry date. A defect warranty and a comfort return serve different purposes. Other sellers have their own rules. [4]

Safety, DFF and seal status

Bounded U.S. recall search, October 4, 2026: We queried CPSC public recall data using ProductName, RecallTitle and RecallDescription for Hyken, and Manufacturer=Staples. The Hyken queries returned no records. The manufacturer query returned a Wood Tilter Chair notice naming another chair; it did not identify Hyken. [5]

This is not exhaustive recall clearance or a safety certification. Search terms may miss records, notices change, and the shipped chair’s serial number and production date remain unknown. TKS has not physically inspected or safety-tested this model. Check official notices and the identifiers on your own chair.

Safety & Recall Override: not applied. The bounded check identified no applicable verified trigger. The approved research finding of no identified Disqualifying Fundamental Flaw remains evidence-limited; concerns and fit mismatches are not automatically verified DFFs.

No Meets The Karim Standard seal. The 66-point score is below the 90-point threshold and required TKS physical testing has not been completed.

The buying decision

The Hyken can make sense when its fixed proportions fit you and the price keeps the purchase manageable. Its limitations are consequential for someone who needs a longer seat, extensive arm movement, particular lumbar pressure or assured full-day warranty terms. Try it and resolve the purchase conditions before treating its budget price as good value for your workday.

Sources and evidence limits

Evidence Last Reviewed: October 4, 2026 for the linked listing, manual, GearLab review, return policy and bounded CPSC queries. The external review reports an older sample; the review date does not make that sample current. Historical score provenance remains partially recovered.
