Quick take

Consider black Dexley UN56946V-CC as a budget mesh candidate if its fixed proportions suit your body and desk.

  • Strengths: Roomier documented seat dimensions and a basic height, lumbar and tilt control set. [1][2]
  • Check first: Front-edge pressure, lumbar feel and limited arm movement. Confirm the shipped model’s manual, warranty and assembled-chair return eligibility. [1][2][3][4][5]

The exact chair in scope

This preview covers the black Staples Dexley, item 24398921, retail model UN56946V-CC. Staples lists a mesh seat and back, a 20.1-inch-wide by 18.3-inch-deep seat, and a 17.4–21-inch seat-height range. No sliding seat-depth adjustment is documented. These figures are seller specifications, not TKS measurements or clear arm-to-arm space. [1]

There is a source-identity limitation: Staples links the retail page to an operator’s manual for ST63111/ST63112/ST63113, while an older Dexley manual names UN56946/UN59375. We verified the retailer’s link; we have not verified that every revision or shipped component is identical. Confirm the model label and applicable manual before relying on a particular warranty or mechanism description. [1][2][3]

Who should consider it?

Consider it if… Consider another chair or insist on a trial if…
You prefer a mesh seat and need more room than compact options offer. You need a sliding seat or a much longer usable seat.
Basic height and tilt controls meet your needs. You need daily arm-width, depth or pivot adjustment.
You can test the front seat edge and lumbar feel. You are sensitive to firm lumbar contact or textured mesh.
You can confirm the manual and return terms for your order. You are assuming an older seven-year warranty applies today.

TKS has not established a universal height range or tested fit for larger users. A weight rating does not establish comfortable seat space or accessible controls.

What the evidence supports

The documented control set is useful but limited. The current linked manual describes seat-height adjustment, arm-height buttons, vertically movable lumbar support, tilt tension, three preset back-lock positions and headrest adjustment. It does not document an independent lumbar-pressure control or a seat-depth slider. [2]

Documentation is not completely consistent: the retail description uses differing tilt terminology, and the manual contains both older upright-lock and three-position language. We therefore do not certify the exact recline linkage or lock behavior of the shipped UN56946V-CC. Check it directly rather than infer sophisticated movement from the product name. [1][2]

Roomier dimensions still leave personal fit unresolved. Try reaching your desk with relaxed shoulders and supported feet. Check whether the back support meets you without forcing a forward perch, and whether the mesh edge presses into your thighs during recline. A chair can offer more space without offering the adjustment needed by a particular sitter.

WIRED’s firsthand review illustrates those limits. Its 6-foot-4 reviewer wanted greater seat depth, found the lumbar contact intrusive and mesh rough, and noted thigh-edge pressure in recline. The review also described useful budget value and roughly 15–20-minute assembly for an experienced builder. Those are one reviewer’s experiences, not TKS findings or a guarantee for your body or the current revision. [4]

TKS has not tested extended comfort, mesh sag, cylinder retention or arm stability. We cannot establish a current-production failure rate from older reports or store ratings, and we do not present unrecovered owner threads as verified evidence.

Evidence Confidence

Evidence Confidence concerns a claim’s support, separately from product quality and the 71-point score. High means strong direct evidence or agreeing credible sources; Moderate means useful support with meaningful limits; Limited means a firm conclusion is not justified.

Claim Confidence Reason
The listing documents a relatively roomy fixed seat. Moderate Dimensions are explicit, but usable fit and physical measurements remain untested. [1]
The chair’s basic controls offer limited fine tuning. Moderate Manual and firsthand review support the general limitation; revision crosswalk and control operation remain unverified. [2][4]
Your shipped chair has the exact movement and coverage described by the linked manual. Limited Retail and manual model identifiers differ; documentation also contains inconsistencies. [1][2][3]
Current-production Dexley is proven comfortable and reliable for years. Limited No TKS long-session or durability results, representative failure data or verified current sample.

Frozen TKS scorecard

These are the approved October 4 category points, retained without rescoring. The notes identify broad research themes and evidence limits. The complete original deduction narrative, owner-thread URLs and exact freeze-time purchase quote remain incompletely recovered; these notes do not invent those missing deductions. Current source checks improve purchase guidance rather than change the numbers.

Price, warranty and returns

The October 4 Staples main purchase area displayed $179.99 for the black retail listing. This is a dated product-page reference, not a verified checkout total or the reconstructed original scoring quote. Confirm selection, tax, delivery and any assembly services before ordering. [1]

Use the current warranty wording carefully. The current linked manual provides the original purchaser five-year defect coverage with proof of purchase, excludes normal wear and bases coverage on up to 8–10 hours of continual use within 24 hours, for users up to 275 pounds. The retail page also lists five-year coverage but describes capacity in a 5–10-hour workday context. [1][2]

The older UN56946/UN59375 manual instead specifies seven years and 3–5 hours of continual use. It is historical evidence, not a promise of seven-year protection for today’s order. Ask Staples to confirm which written terms apply to the model shipped. These are documentation differences; neither workday wording proves comfort or TKS load performance. [3]

A return is different from a warranty claim. The Staples policy gives furniture 14 days from receipt, with disassembly, safe-shipping and sellable-condition/original-packaging requirements. Custom-ordered or custom-assembled furniture is returnable only if defective on arrival. It also contains a Staples Brands quality-dissatisfaction provision of up to one year and an item-specific return-expiry date in Order Details. We have not resolved their application to an assembled chair used for a poor-fit trial. Confirm that scenario in writing for your order, keep packaging and receipt, and check the expiry date. “Free Returns” alone does not establish a one-year sitting trial. Other sellers’ terms can differ. [5]

Use the fit checklist and cost worksheet to record fit, the actual purchase total and confirmed return costs.

Safety, DFF and seal status

Bounded U.S. recall search, October 4, 2026: CPSC public-data queries ProductName=Dexley, RecallTitle=Dexley and RecallDescription=Dexley returned no records. Manufacturer=Staples returned a Wood Tilter Chair notice naming a different chair, without identifying Dexley. [6]

This result is not exhaustive clearance or a safety certification. Search coverage can miss records, notices change, and the shipped model’s serial number and production date remain unknown. TKS has not physically inspected or safety-tested a Dexley. Check official notices and your chair’s identifiers for applicability.

Safety & Recall Override: not applied. No applicable verified trigger was identified in that search. The approved finding of no identified Disqualifying Fundamental Flaw remains evidence-limited; a reported fit problem or construction concern does not automatically establish a verified DFF.

No Meets The Karim Standard seal. The 71-point score is below 90 and required TKS physical testing is incomplete.

The buying decision

Dexley deserves a look when you want budget mesh and its fixed proportions work at your desk. Test the lumbar contact, front edge, arms and recline rather than assume the extra seat space guarantees comfort. Resolve the model/manual and return terms before an online purchase. 71/100 — Fair is a conditional research assessment, not a universal recommendation.

Sources and evidence limits

Evidence Last Reviewed: October 4, 2026 for the listing, current and older manuals, WIRED review, return policy and bounded CPSC queries. External sample age and revision remain separate from that review date. The historical scoring narrative is partially recovered; no owner-report frequency or current failure rate is claimed.

Next Scheduled Review: April 4, 2027, with earlier review for recovered scoring evidence, product or policy revisions, safety notices or TKS testing. The model/manual clarification should precede purchase.

  1. Staples: black Dexley, item 24398921/model UN56946V-CC — identifiers, dimensions, listing claims and dated product-page price.
  2. Staples: currently linked Dexley ST63111/ST63112/ST63113 manual — control instructions and five-year warranty; retail model crosswalk unverified.
